Most sliding doors use one of two core mechanisms: a hook-bolt or claw-bolt latch that swings up into a strike pocket in the door frame, or a full mortise lock assembly embedded inside the door stile. A mortise lock on a sliding door is a self-contained unit — the latch, deadbolt, and sometimes an anti-lift pin are all housed in a single rectangular cartridge routed into the edge of the door. When that cartridge cracks, the cam that drives the bolt strips out, or the cylinder loses its grip, the whole door can be left unsecured even if it looks closed from the outside.
